Gatwick airport VAT refund : what travellers should know

If you are searching for a VAT refund at Gatwick airport, the answer is no, not at Gatwick.

If you bought goods in Great Britain, you can no longer reclaim VAT at the airport on those purchases. And if you bought goods in France or Belgium, the refund process normally has to be completed before you leave the EU, not after you arrive in the UK.

That is why this creates so much confusion. Many travellers search for an airport solution when the real answer depends on where they shopped and when they leave the EU customs area. In other words, Gatwick is often part of the journey, but not the place where the VAT refund actually happens.

Key takeaways
  • You cannot get a VAT refund at Gatwick airport.

  • If you shop in France or Belgium, your tax-free form must be validated before leaving the EU.

  • Duty free shopping at the airport is different from reclaiming VAT on items bought in boutiques, department stores, or online.

  • Zapptax simplifies VAT refund for travellers by preparing the correct documents before they leave the EU, especially for purchases made in France or Belgium.

Can you get a VAT refund at Gatwick Airport ?

The UK government withdrew the VAT Retail Export Scheme from Great Britain ( England, Scotland and Wales) on 1 January 2021 following Brexit.

That means travellers leaving England, Scotland, or Wales can no longer claim VAT refunds at the airport on purchases they bought in the UK and are carrying in their luggage. Although they can still buy duty-free goods in the departure lounge.

The situation is quite different for purchases made in France or Belgium, which are EU countries. Those purchases remain eligible for a VAT refund, but the validation has to happen on EU soil before departure.

Common travel scenarios via Gatwick Airport

Gatwick serves a high volume of routes from France, with direct flights from Paris, Nice, Lyon, Marseille and other French cities landing here daily. This means many travellers face a very practical question: "I bought things in France. Can I sort the VAT refund when I land at Gatwick?"

Here is a clear breakdown by situation.

🇺🇸 I am from the US. I shopped in France and fly home via Gatwick.

The VAT refund is yours to claim but it must be processed before you board the plane in France. Validate your tax-free form at the EU exit point before leaving the EU. In France, this is usually done at a PABLO kiosk or with a Customs officer, and it must be completed before checking in luggage containing the goods.

🇦🇺 I am from Australia. I fly Paris → Gatwick → Sydney. Where do I validate?

Your last point of departure from the EU is Paris. That is where validation must happen, at the French Customs desk before your flight to Gatwick. The Gatwick stopover is in the UK (outside the EU) so EU Customs rules no longer apply there.

🇬🇧 I live in the UK. I shopped in France.

Good news. UK residents are fully eligible for the French VAT refund. The refund process is the same, validate your tax-free forms at EU Customs (PABLO kiosk) before leaving France.

🇺🇸 I am from the US. I shopped in London.

No refund is available. Purchases made in Great Britain are not eligible under any current tourist VAT scheme. This applies regardless of the amount spent, the store, or the nationality of the buyer.

How to get your VAT refund before flying via Gatwick ?

For non-EU travellers shopping in France or Belgium before flying via Gatwick, Zapptax makes the tax-free process simpler and more rewarding.

Purchases from different shops and different days can all be combined into a single tax-free form. Depending on the total combined spend, Zapptax can refund up to 90% of the VAT amount.

Here is how it works.

1. Download the app and verify your identity once

Create your profile in Zapptax before you start shopping. Identity verification only needs to happen once, no need to repeat it in every store.

2. Ask for a Zapptax invoice

At checkout, ask the retailer for a VAT invoice made out to Zapptax. This applies in-store and for online purchases.

3. Upload your invoices and combine your purchases

Zapptax lets travellers combine invoices from different shops and different days into a single application. There is no minimum spend per store, purchases accumulate until the legal threshold (€100.01 VAT incl. in France and 125€ in Belgium) is reached.

4. Receive your tax-free form

Zapptax generates a single compliant tax-free form covering all eligible purchases.

5. Validate at EU Customs and get your refund

At your point of departure, validate the form at Customs (PABLO kiosk in France) or with a Customs officer before checking in bags containing the purchased goods. Once validated, Zapptax automatically triggers your refund, which arrives within a few weeks.

Conclusion

For purchases made in Great Britain, there is no tourist VAT refund available, the UK ended that scheme with Brexit.

For purchases made in France or Belgium, the refund is yours to claim, but only if the tax-free forms are validated before leaving the EU.

If you are flying via Gatwick, the right moment to act is at the EU departure, not after landing in London.

FAQ
1. What is a VAT refund, and how does Zapptax help?

A VAT refund lets eligible travellers recover part of the VAT paid on goods bought in the EU and taken home in their luggage. Zapptax makes the process easier: you upload your invoice in the app, request your tax-free form, validate it at customs when leaving the EU, and receive your refund after validation. One of Zapptax’s main advantages is that it combines purchases by country, helping travellers reach the minimum threshold more easily.

2. Can I get a VAT refund at Gatwick Airport ?

No. Gatwick Airport is not a place where travellers can obtain or process VAT refund forms for purchases made in Great Britain. Since the UK withdrew the VAT Retail Export Scheme in Great Britain, travellers leaving from Gatwick can no longer reclaim VAT on goods bought in shops in England, Scotland, or Wales and taken home in their personal luggage.

3. Where should I validate my tax-free form if I fly home via Gatwick ?

You must validate your tax-free form at your last point of departure from the EU, not at Gatwick. That could be an airport, train station, port, or border crossing, depending on your route. Airport validation must be done before baggage drop. If you leave the EU from a different country than the one where you shopped, you will usually need a printed form and a manual customs stamp.
